The assumption that vaccines work by simply producing antibodies is wrong. Ron Montelaro of the University of Pittsburgh has been studying a HIVrelated virus in horses, known as Equine Infectious Anaemia Virus, and has found that the vaccinated horses die quicker than the unvaccinated horses. Montelaro has suggested that. the stimulation of antibodies may actually help pull virus particles into the cells they are trying to protect. The Strength of the Vaccine Paradigm. The epidemiological/statistical observation of a decline in deaths due to communicable illnesses over the past two centuries, together with the principles of specific aetiology of diseases (or “germ theory”), are the empirical and theoretical foundations (respectively) of the doctrine that supports vaccination as one of modern medicine's principle triumphs over disease. A vast scientific endeavour has been focussed upon the research and limitation of infectious diseases based upon the germ theory of disease, and utilising the principle tool of vaccination. The sheer magnitude of the theory, data and praxis of vaccination has ultimately led to a widespread consensus of acceptance, at least for the modern western psyche. Dissent to Vaccines. Those who question the efficacy or safety of vaccines have long been stigmatised by proponents of conventional medical doctrine as subject to either some sort of mental deficit, or perhaps an unwarranted phobia, paranoid neurosis or an ulterior pecuniary interest. However, vaccine dissidents do seem to exist outside of the halls of institutions for the cognitively disabled. For example, famous medical critics of the twentieth century such as George Bernard Shaw, Robert Mendelsohn and Ivan Illich, all noted the widespread dogmatic acceptance of the fundamental tenets of modern medicine. They drew the analogy between religion and medicine as they pronounced their hereticism to the latter. To them, the questioning of vaccine safety or efficacy could indeed be construed as “heretical” to the medical faith, but not without substantial cause. Despite the constant historic presence of vaccine dissent from a few highly visible spokespersons, the weight of social acceptance of vaccine practice means that the enterprise of vaccine dissent is always an arduous one. Critics of vaccination are frequently stereotyped and stigmatised, as stated above. As is usual for partisans in scientific controversies, the predominant goal of the defending orthodoxy has been to make attributions regarding dissident claims as due to "non-scientific" factors, whilst they buttress their own claims as the 'real' and the only scientifically validated ones. Issues in Dissent. Though the concepts involved in vaccine dissent are well beyond the scope of this brief introduction, a few of the problems and details of the controversies over vaccination efficacy and safety should be mentioned here. Complexity of Finding Technical Answers. Due to the complexity of causative factors in infectious diseases, the startling world-view contrast in the theses which attempt to explain them, and the difficulty in designing "gold standard" experiments due to the inevitable (ethically based) conflicts of interest that follow, it is rather difficult to determine answers to pertinent questions on vaccine efficacy and safety, once the issues of controversy and dissent are taken into account. Perhaps due to the dominating consensus of a 'field in closure' (this is perhaps one of many reasons), there is also a scarcity of research resources directed towards asking difficult, challenging, fundamental questions regarding vaccines. Hence there is considerable scope for uncertainty, in such a supposedly certain area. To this already complex arena are added the difficulties posed by such things as the conflicts of interest of researchers, influence in the scientific domain of financially vested interests, biased / unfair selectivity in the journal publication of medical research, biases in medical education, skewing of the demographics of decisionmakers themselves involved in public health policy, mass media filtering, a potentially distorted public understanding of the relevant science, and a myriad of other additional complicating factors. From all of this complexity, at least, follows a verification of one assertion of vaccine dissidents, that the efficacy or safety of vaccines is all too often assumed without real trial, and that the 'real world' with human subjects becomes the ultimate 'test bed' for vaccines. This 'test bed' as a measure of vaccines is itself highly flawed for many reasons, not the least being that the data collection/analysis of vaccination failure rates and adverse effect rates in the 'test bed' are woefully inadequate, on a global scale. Disparate World-Views. Most of the promulgations involving vaccines as efficacious and safe hold as implicit the reductionistic western orthodox model of disease and the fundamental tenets of germ theory, which themselves tend to come into question by some vaccine dissidents. To these dissidents, relatively few research writings directly address the validity of the basic premises upon which the vast scientific effort of immunisation and vaccination is built. It certainly makes for an interesting line of questioning regarding the issues at stake. Until these fundamental disagreements are explicated and evaluated, little progress towards a greater understanding of human disease (and what we are actually doing when we vaccinate) can occur. As it stands at present, the two different world views see each other in an incommensurable light. This is obviously a situation which does not lend itself to easy solutions. Orthodox Research failing it's own Prerequisites for "Scientific Merit". Some dissidents might point to what they see as an anomaly ridden paradigm as the only supporting structure for the practice of vaccination. These anomalies, in the form of failure to protect within the vaccinated, or side effects that range from mild or chronic through to extremely detrimental (e.g. death), are simply dismissed as irrelevant or extremely low in incidence by the medical orthodoxy. A fully fledged acknowledgement of the available data might interfere with the standard operation of the normal science of the vaccine paradigm. (see the Science Studies section on Kuhn for a definition.) Other dissidents might assert that primary or "gold standard" experimental evaluations of vaccines that should be fundamental to the acquisition of a rational position on vaccines, have never been conducted. A principle source of supporting evidence for dissidents is demonstrably derived from within the establishment's own medical research literature. In general though, this argumentation is not received well by the medical orthodoxy. In brief, this lack of receptivity is often manifested in defensive retorts that are often incoherent/irrelevant or rhetorical in nature, rather than research or 'fact' based. This use of 'orthodox' research by dissidents is contrary to the rhetorical and defamatory claims of the orthodoxy which asserts dissidents to be operating in a "non-scientific" manner. This concept of a purely internal inconsistency of orthodox defences transcends issues about metaanlytic methodologies, and is another area of orthodox lacunae requiring further study. Further, the controversy highlighted by dissidents actually underlines an essential rift between certain research entities internal to the orthodoxy, versus another group comprising other internal research entities along with most of the clinical and educational sectors of the medical orthodoxy. The latter partisans, acting in defense of vaccination, tend to simply ignore counter evidence against vaccination safety or efficacy as generated by the anomaly generating research entities. This leads to the indication that in analysing the vaccine controversy, there is a further complexity to the general category of "medical orthodoxy" which must be delineated and its functioning within the arena further evaluated, along with communication flows and barriers between sub-entities. Any conceptualisation that there is unity in the medical orthodoxy --or even more specifically-- the medical research fraternity, is simplistic and is, in this context, to be seen as a concept infused with ideological commitment, typically used in the defence of vaccines. Why Study Vaccine Dissent? The position held by consumercide.com is that dissent to the orthodox position is a worthy subject of a (post)constructivist sociological enquiry. It is not merely a fascinating sociological foray into the mechanisms of science, but it is also socially worthwhile to analyse such controversies from a constructivist point of view, where the various knowledge claims within the controversy may have less to do with real, tangible, empirical or ontological "facts" than they do to sociological, political and economic factors. In such 'medical' environments where the emphasis lies in the latter, an irony occurs in that health itself is in danger of becoming relegated to a secondary position of importance. Deeper sociological analysis might bring to light a strong case for reprioritisation in the field. As similarly noted in the case of the study of HIV=AIDS theory, the controversy regarding vaccination offers an incredibly interesting insight to the sociological mechanisms that generally underpin medical scientific knowledge. Vaccine dissent serves as yet another example of a medical controversy that delineates serious anomalies, that challenge the present foundational paradigmatic basis of that medicine variously termed western, orthodox, establishment, reductionistic or allopathic. Purpose of resources included here The central goal aspired to within the works that appear on the vaccination section of Consumercide.com is that some validity is lent to the proposition that more attention be paid to whether indeed vaccination is a laudable objective, being safe and effective: or rather--as once pronounced by a prominent dissident--is it “dangerous and useless ...and a waste of public money”. It is presumed that it is a worthwhile objective to research such fundamental questions concerning human health.

However, the term "anti-vaccination" is usually levelled at them by spokespersons for establishment medicine. The term may serve rhetorical purposes for the pro-vaccine stance due to its connotations of radicalism. vaccination/immunisation; from the dissident point of view, these terms should be clearly separated, because the former relates strictly to the medical practice of injection of materials into the bloodstream of a subject, or the oral / nasal administration of a vaccine. The latter relates to a process within the immune system of a subject which actually confers immunity to a disease. To merge the terms is to fall prey to one of the medical orthodoxy's implicit preconceptions/assumptions. "We're programmed to think of immunization and vaccination as synonyms. That's no accident. It cost plenty to make us think they're the same thing. The word immunization instead of vaccination is pervasive in both medical and mainstream literature, creating a semantic reality that cannot be supported by scientific evidence. In actuality, there's a big difference. Immunization means to make someone immune to something. Vaccination, by contrast, just means to inject something into the bloodstream.
