First it was necessary to civilize man in relation to man. Now it is necessary to civilize man in relation to nature and the animals.

--Victor Hugo (poet, novelist, and playwright)

Humankind, in some ways, is slowly becoming more moral, and is learning from its mistakes. At least in modern societies, minority groups are enjoying unprecedented access to the rights that they once had no access to... they now have opportunities to live a life where they are respected and cared for as a valuable part of society, rather than an abberation or inferior class... fundamental entitlements that should be the right of every human being. The recent, immense outcry over utterly unjustified wars and an elite minority's atrocious behaviour have unified conscious peace-loving individuals all over the world; and we still have a long way to go, but the pendulum is swinging... and amoral transnationals and corrupt governments will be no barrier to the new superpower, the people.

But...

One of the most critical topics on the consumercide site is about eating meat. Human carnivorism is a widespread activity which fails to acknowledge the consciousness that is inherent in all of the animals that are eaten. It is often an enormously violent and tragic activity which lies behind the scenes of things that most end consumers only see as a 'steak', a 'fillet' or a 'drumstick'. Most people are not conscious of the deep atrocity that they are taking part in, and how they can healthfully avoid the atrocity by becoming conscious of the damage that they are doing (to both the animals and their own health). Please spend the time to at least consider the arguments against meat eating, and visit some of the many great vege sites on the web.

Organic and Conventional Farming
Produce Equal Net Returns

Organically farmed corn and soybean crops were only minimally reduced as compared to conventionally farmed crops. Moreover, after factoring in production costs, the two farming methods yielded equal net returns, according to a study.

Over 80 percent of U.S. corn and soybean crops are grown in the Midwest. The majority of crops, which take up over 100 million acres, are produced using a conventional corn-soybean rotation practice, which includes annual synthetic fertilizer and pesticide applications.

Organic production practices follow guidelines defined by the United States Department of Agriculture’s National Organic Program (NOP) and offer an alternative to conventional farming methods.

In the study, which was conducted from 1989 to 1999 in two locations, researchers evaluated a two-year corn-soybean rotation and a four-year corn-soybean-oat/alfalfa-alfalfa rotation using conventional and organic production strategies.

Corn grown from 1993 through 1999 using the organic four-year rotation yielded nine percent and seven percent less (at the two locations) than corn grown using the conventional two-year rotation.

Organically produced soybeans grown during the same time period yielded 19 percent and 16 percent less at each respective location than the conventional two-year rotation soybeans.

According to researchers, weed control played a major role in the larger reduction yields from organically produced soybeans as compared to corn. The soybean crop had increased weed pressure because of its placement in the rotation sequence.

Although the four-year organic method showed a reduction in both corn and soybean yields compared with the two-year conventional emthod, the organic method had lower production costs. Therefore, net returns for both methods were equivalent, according to the study.

DR. MERCOLA'S COMMENT:

Encouraging support that organic farmers should be able to use to further promote their beneficial practices. Not only does organic food have fewer pesticides, fewer nitrates from fertilizers and more nutrients, it is also far healthier for the environment than conventionally grown food.source

There is a lot of material to cover in this topic.

The following are intended initial topics;

Genetically Engineered Foods

  • ISIS has a wealth of info on GM foods...
  • Seeds of Deception

  • Jeffrey Smith, founder of the Institute for Responsible Technology, argues that the few independent GM feeding studies done point to animals sustaining damage to the immune system and to vital organs and showing precancerous conditions and stomach lesions from GM food. "Seeds of Deception" looks into the politics of the science and how scientific dissent has been silenced and the scientific process corrupted by vested interests.

Irradiated Foods

Food Toxicity
  • A recent study has revealed that common people are burdened with dozens of environmental toxins, many of them PCBs. (external link)

  • Huge CDC report on toxins shows need for further study, by Bob Condor
  • Volatile Organic Compounds in Foods: A Five Year Study An FDA study published in the Journal of Agriculture and Food Chemistry now shows that VOCs in food are probably more of a problem than had generally been assumed. Especially high levels of the carcinogen benzene were found in many foods.

Toxic Additives

Organic Farming

Back to Basics for Thai Farms

The accomplishment may seem small but for Karj Panyalah the fact that he can now walk barefoot through his own rice fields speaks volumes. Thirteen years ago the Chiang Rai farmer turned his back on the use of chemicals and since then health has gradually returned to the soil of his two plots of land, to him and his family and, hopefully, to those who eventually eat the grain he grows.

Soy Products & Health

Consumercide Note:
As a vegetarian who relied quite heavily on soy products as meat substitutes, I experienced first hand the effect of such dissident information and the cognitive dissonance that it can create. First of all, I ignored the task of reading this material, avoiding the question altogether. Eventually though, I broke through the haze of denial in order to read the evidence and evaluate the situation, armed with the increased knowledge that the texts below provided. I was alarmed by this information as a vegetarian and soy product consumer, and have taken steps to reduce my personal intake.

Having said that, I still find it objectionable that some authors use the dissent over soy as a vehicle with which to endorse the practice of eating meat. There are a wide array of reasons that one should not eat meat that have nothing to do with soy product toxicity, and any attempted alignment of the two concepts is purely specious. As one small example, spirulina can provide a superior protein to meat (higher % content protein, more accessible to the body) without any animal murder. (That is, if you buy into the protein arguments that are currently consensus. See vegetarian websites listed below & mirrored articles for why this thinking may be flawed.)

More Research showing that even fish are capable of smart activity.
It is regrettable that this article goes on to show the ignorance of the author by shallowly suggesting that the discovery merely has implications for the way people feed upon fish. He does not stop to consider that there are deeper issues here. This research demonstrates, if it even need be demonstrated, that there is a level of consciousness possessed by aquatic animals, in contrast to common opinion regarding them. Fish also have a level of consciousness that must be taken into account in the decision that humans make to eat them. As the zen buddists say, they don't eat anything that runs away (or swims, for that matter), because that action vividly demonstrates both consciousness and fear of death. Also see Don't Buy the Fish Story for a health driven perspective about fish consumption.

Vegetarianism

As a vegetarian, this webmaster is admittedly partial to the practice, and I don't generally accept the limited information on antivegetarianism. Most of the latter centres around health issues, and as far as I can see there is much more literature avalable regarding the negative health impact of meat products (as compared to positive). Though the 'pros and cons' of vegetarianism in a health context are perhaps still debatable (though to me the antivegetarian literature is dubious at best), nevertheless, the 'cons' of meat eating via animal cruelty, world inequality and ecosustainability viewpoints cannot be seriously questioned by an ethical or rational mind. As this section of the site is built, all these issues will be addressed...
