T.L.Dormandy wrote this opinion in the Lancet of Nov 12th 1988. It is still highly relevant to the problems that exist in the medical establishment's current conceptualisations regarding peroxidation in vivo. Dormandy suggests that the understanding of these reactions in the body might be crucial to a better understanding of the mechanisms of the maintenance of health in the human body. (I think that the importance of this thesis cannot be underestimated...)

PRESS RELEASES 9/22/97
Growing numbers of cancer patients are exploring diet, food supplements, herbs, and nontoxic immunotherapies like bacterial vaccines as a means of therapy. Yet most cancer research organizations refuse to evaluate these alternatives. Can Bacteria Cause Cancer?: Alternative Medicine Confronts Big Science ($26.95, cloth/239 pages), to be published in November by the New York University Press, challenges the orthodox medical establishment, taking a look at what can cause cancer and what can remedy it. The book argues convincingly that unless this neglected world of alternative therapies is properly scrutinized, cancer, the "medical Vietnam of the 20th century," may well affect one in two people by the 21st century. Author David J. Hess, associate professor of anthropology in the Science and Technology Studies Department at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, investigates the relationship between bacteria and chronic disease. Recently, we are reminded, scientists have overturned long-held beliefs by demonstrating that bacterial infections cause many ulcers; they are now reconsidering the role of bacterial infections in other chronic illnesses, such as arthritis. Is it possible, Hess asks, that bacteria can contribute to the many other known causes of cancer? To answer this intriguing question, Hess takes us into the world of alternative cancer researchers. Maintaining that their work has been actively suppressed rather than simply dismissed, he examines these researchers' claims - that bacterial vaccines have led to some long-term cancer remission - and the scientific potential of their theories. Hess says that financial and professional interests as well as more general cultural factors can explain the history of the suppression of these researchers' work. "When one reviews the evidence in support of the bacterial etiology theory against today's best available scientific knowledge, it appears that bacterial infections may play some contributing role in the genesis or promotion of some human cancers," Hess says. He adds, "Several other alternative cancer therapies show some preliminary evidence in support of claims of safety and efficacy, and they have a credible possible biological mechanism. Those therapies should be provided with additional public funding for evaluation." Challenging the medical establishment, Hess declares that it is time to end the war on cancer by "bringing home the men and women from the research fronts that have led nowhere, and putting them to work on meaningful prevention and on testing the alternative therapies that the public is already using." The recipient of a National Science Foundation grant to examine public understandings of science in the alternative cancer therapy and research community, David J. Hess is the author of Science in the New Age and Science and Technology in a Multicultural World. NYU Press will publish his Science Studies: An Advanced Introduction, which examines the social impact of science and technology, later this fall. Consumercide.com has no

This fascinating work is
subtitled "The true story of efforts to suppress an alternative treament
for cancer, AIDS, and other immunologically based diseases". It details
the scientific achievements of Gaston Naessens, his alternative theories
of somatids and 714-X treatment: it argues against germ theory dogma, and
details Naessens' problems with a Quebec pharmaceutical company and its
continual, unsuccessful litigations that spanned decades. The book also
gives some detail of Burzynski's ordeals after discovering his antineoplaston
treatment, and gives a good essay on the politics of medicine and suppression
of dissent.
