Raining Pianos: A Short Course on Anecdotal Evidence
By Lenny Schafer, 2003
Patient: Doctor, my son has this terrible headache. He's dizzy
and he's been fainting a lot. He says his arm is numb.
Dr. Steinway: What happened?
Patient: We were walking down the street and a piano fell on
his head.
Dr. Steinway: I see. Mmmm. Anything else happen at the time
that might have caused this?
Patient: What d! o you mean, "anything else?" A PIANO FELL ON HIS
HEAD!
Dr. Steinway: Perhaps, but that's only a temporal coincidence.
Several epidemiological studies done by eminent scientists have failed
to find a connection between pianos and concussions. The cause could
be any number of environmental factors. Kids get bumped by stuff all
the time. Only a rare few get concussions. Maybe your child has a
genetically predisposed soft skull. Any family history of concussions?
Münchhausen by Proxy? Hypochondria?
Patient: But I was there! I saw it falling from the second
story of a piano factory! I couldn't get him out of the way fast
enough and he caught a piece of the candelabra. If it's not the
piano, what else could it possibly be?
Dr. Steinway: Hysteria, guilt. What you're telling me is
called "anecdotal evidence". Such evidence can be either evaluated
for further research, or completely dismissed as useless without even
looking at it, depending on the interests or bias of the researchers.
The important thing is that it isn't pianos . . .hey wait, where are
you going, we're not through. . .
Patient: I'm going to look for care somewhere else, and to see
a lawyer to sue the piano company. . . and maybe even you.
Dr. Steinway: [to himself] Uh huh, lawyers. I thought someone
might have put her up to this. Lawyers. . .taking advantage of
ignorant hysterics looking for something to blame for their woes. . .
The problem's not pianos, the problem is lack of tort reform. . .she
wouldn't even let her kid have one of our complimentary "We're Silly
for Eli Lilly" clinic balloons.
It's Now 20 More Deaths connected to Gardasil HPV Vaccine
**Most Current Adverse Reactions reported here**
Just so you know only 10% of the adverse reactions gets reported and the count on the site is over 6,000 adverse reactions so in reality over 60,000 children had an adverse reaction.
One of the contributing reasons to the significant increase in report of adverse reactions with HPV Vaccine is that the group that is receiving this vaccine is generally able to complain about it. Usually, the medical orthodoxy has the luxury of ramming its' toxins into the bloodstreams of those who cannot yet complain about it... and regrettably there are some who consequently will never be able to do so.
Gardasil Vaccine- The Facts
Sunday, July 6th, 2008 - For Immediate Release:
The Sunday Telegraph today released a story about the large number of Australian women and girls who are reporting serious reactions to the new Gardasil vaccine. (Cancer vaccine linked to illness in women, Sydney Sunday Telegraph, 06/07/08)
The Australian Vaccination Network (AVN), a national non-profit health lobby group which which has received approval from ADRAC (the Adverse Drug Reactions Advisory Committee) to report vaccine reactions on behalf of individuals, is not surprised at the release of this information. Meryl Dorey, National President of the AVN, has said for the last 12 months that from the experience of the AVN, Gardasil is the most dangerous vaccine released to date. "We have received more reaction reports from Gardasil than from any other vaccine over the very short space of time since it was released.".
According to information obtained by Channel 7 under a Freedom of Information claim, 681 reactions to Gardasil were reported to ADRAC as of January 30, 2008. Of these reported reactions, more than one-third had not yet recovered. (Please see summary table below - full information available by contacting the AVN)
In the Telegraph article, Dr Jeremy McAnulty, NSW Health's director of communicable diseases, stated that none of the reported reactions were life-threatening. This statement contradicts the facts contained within the ADRAC report.
In the same article, Federal Health Minister Nicola Roxon has stated that all vaccines in Australia undergo stringent safety testing by experts. Unfortunately, according to our own TGA (the Therapeutic Goods Administration), vaccines are not tested in Australia for either safety or effectiveness and Gardasil is no exception. Gardasil's pre-licensure tests were performed overseas and were funded by the manufacturer of the drug. During this testing, 17 deaths were reported and a very large number of reactions (more than 90% of those tested reported at least one systemic reaction). Despite this, the vaccine was registered for use in Australia.
Below is a brief recap of some of the reactions contained within the ADRAC summary describing a range of potentially life-threatening reactions:
Guillaine-Barre Paralysis, Cranial Nerve Paralysis, Anaphylactic (severe, life-threatening allergic) reactions, Paralysis, Encephalitis, Haemorrhage, Deep-Vein Thrombosis and Arterial Thrombosis, reactions involving the heart such as tachycardia, chest pain and uncontrolled seizures.
"The Health Department has been playing fast and loose with people's lives," Ms Dorey continued. "They have not released this information to the public but have forced the filing of FOI claims in order to obtain it. They have ignored, downplayed and minimised the effect that this vaccine is having on Australian women and girls and, what's worse, there are government plans to bring this vaccine into the childhood vaccination schedule for both girls AND boys!"
The AVN believes that it is time to err on the side of caution when it comes to vaccination. Whilst Australian women and girls are reporting record numbers of reactions (and bear in mind that ADRAC admits that only between 1 and 10 percent of reactions ever actually get reported), we need to take a step back, stop using this vaccine until it's proven to be safe.

About Australian Vaccination Network, Inc.
The AVN is a non-profit, volunteer-run charitable association. Since 1994, the AVN has provided information and support to the general community who are trying to make informed choices about vaccination and health. Their lobbying in Federal Parliament has ensured that compulsory vaccination for children has not come to pass and they are the major reporters of vaccine adverse reactions to ADRAC (The Adverse Drug Reactions Advisory Committee).

* US wanted nerve gas tests done on Australians
* Request caused consternation in PM's office
* 200 troops would have been sprayed with chemicals
IT'S been revealed that the US military planned to test deadly nerve gas on Australian soldiers in far north Queensland during the Cold War.
Newly declassified Defence and Prime Minister's office files show that the US was strongly pushing then prime minister Harold Holt's government in the 1960s to allow tests of two of the deadliest chemical weapons ever developed - VX and GB, better known as Sarin nerve gas.
The revelation will air this morning on the Nine Network's Sunday program.
It says the top secret plan involved allowing 200 mainly Australian combat troops to be aerially bombed and sprayed with the chemical weapons.
It's understood the Iron Range rainforest near Lockhart River in far north Queensland was the likely location for the tests.
Peter Bailey, a former senior official with Mr Holt, tells the program the request caused consternation in Canberra, and as far as he knows the tests never went ahead.
But he says planning was very advanced in the US, which wanted the operation to be kept secret because the weapons were illegal under international law.

* Rise in bad reactions to vaccinations
* Linked to cervical cancer vaccine
* Doctors stress benefits outweigh side effects
THE new cervical cancer jab is believed to be behind a huge jump in the number of women and girls suffering bad reactions to vaccinations.
The first annual vaccination statistics for New South Wales to include Gardasil reveal a 1600 per cent surge in reported adverse side-effects among young females who were immunised last year.
These include allergic reactions, collapsing, dizziness, nausea and unexplained illnesses.
New female cases pushed the total adverse reactions to immunisations last year to the highest on record. NSW Health says it is monitoring the situation closely, but said the results did not outweigh the benefits of the vaccination program.
Australian-developed Gardasil vaccinations were introduced to girls aged 12 and 13 through federal Government-funded school programs last year. They are also offered free to 13- to 18-year-olds as part of a catch-up program, and to young women aged up to 26.
"One of the reasons we are very careful to track immunisations is that a trial is one thing but we also want to check what happens in the real world," Dr Jeremy McAnulty, NSW Health's director of communicable diseases, said. "All vaccines have some usually very minor side-effects but we are keen to see if some major ones emerge."
However, Dr McAnulty stressed the benefits of the vaccine in preventing human papillomavirus (HPV), which can lead to cervical cancer, were overwhelming.
Most of the adverse reactions were recorded by nurses during school-based immunisations and none were life-threatening, he said. NSW Public Health data reveals that there were 224 official reports of adverse events linked to immunisation last year -- 133 of which were in females aged between five and 24.
In comparison, there were only 70 in total the previous year, with just eight recorded in young females. This is a 1662.5 per cent rise in reactions among young women. The statistics do not break down which vaccinations cause the side-effects. But nationally, there have been 1013 reports of adverse side-effects from Gardasil from doctors, parents and patients to the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA).
But the real number of reactions may be significantly higher, according to Women's Forum Australia director and health researcher Melinda Tankard Reist. She said: "I am not surprised that there has been an increase in reported reactions.
"Most adverse reactions are never reported so you have to multiply it by many times (to get the real figure).
"The health department and the Health Minister really need to have a closer look at this vaccine and a closer look at side-effects."
Federal Health Minister Nicola Roxon said the Government planned to continue the cervical cancer immunisation program.
"There are stringent safeguards in place to ensure vaccines in Australia are tested for safety by medical experts," she said.
According to the TGA, 3.7 million doses of Gardasil have been administered in Australia and, since October last year, the overall rate of adverse reactions has been decreasing.
Dr Rachel David, director of public affairs at pharmaceutical company CSL, insisted its vaccination was safe but said the company was also monitoring any adverse reactions.
